S43 has been around for a while, and I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to finally drive down to Durban and check it out. I had seen on their Facebook page that they have drink specials on a Friday, so what better way to spend the afternoon unwinding after a long week at work.
We arrivind in Station drive, immediately you can see how many trendy places are opening up and how creative the whole building feels. Kinda reminds me a bit of Cape Town. There was music playing in the staircase leading up to S43 and Distillery 031, getting you in that weekend mode. There is a bar straight in front of you as you enter and the brewery to your right, how cool. You take a left and you will walk into a gorgeously decorated restaurant area with all sorts of seating.
The menu consists of tapas, street food, gourmet burgers, salads, desserts and even milkshakes. Drafts are half price between 4-6pm (R15), and what makes it even more ideal is the view with the occasional train passing by.
For starters we had their “special” chicken strips, served with a dijon type mayo and their stuffed, deep fried olives. My word the portions were very generous, it was so full of flavour and not oily at all!!! The deep fried olives were “out of this world”, I could of happily eaten a few bowls to myself.
As most of my readers know, I have a massive obsession for burgers. I often opt to eat at a burger joint over other cuisines. A great tasting gourmet burger is my ultimate comfort food.
I ordered the 100% Pure beef burger (beer battered onion rings, jalapeno mayo and oven dried tomato), and my hubby ordered the Mexican chicken (guacamole, sour cream, tomato salsa, tortillas). They were both GINORMOUS, fresh ingredients used, ultra tasty and the potato wedges on the side completed the meal. We were even given some complimentary dijon mayo that we had raved about during the starters. Dipping those potato wedges in that tangy mayo was heavenly.
So, dessert was certainly not on the cards as we were both so stuffed. We were going to come back at a later time, when we were feeling more up to it. So we glanced at the menu with no intention to order until the baked cheesecake started calling my name, how annoying.
I would only ever order a cheesecake if it’s baked as I find the fridge cheesecakes are generally too sweet and often taste quite fake. This generous slice was served with salted caramel drizzled over the top and some freshly popped popcorn.
The next time you rack your brain for somewhere new to try, I would highly recommend S43, it’s vibey, relaxed and you will end up having a rad time. They often have events and food specials and are apart of the new “First Thursdays” initiative.
